She's The Best

As Mothers Day arrives, I always think about what motherhood means to me. I haven't always gotten along with my mom. I have to admit that there were some teen years that were less than pleasant. Now that I am a mother, I wish I could go back and counsel myself and maybe even do a little scolding. My mother was not perfect. The house wasn't always clean and there weren't fresh cookies in the cookie jar every week or dinners made from scratch on the table every night. I am so grateful for who and what my mother is though. What is she? you ask? She's AWESOME.

My mom raised three children mostly by herself. I will never know and could never measure how much she sacrificed for my brother and sister and me. She worked multiple jobs at times to keep bills paid and food on the table. She never missed a concert or a game or a competition or a play. My mom was always very supportive of us and tried to encourage us to follow our dreams and develop our talents. She was also a spiritual shepherd for our family. She taught us to love and serve the Lord and to do the same with those around us. Mom comforted us when we were sad or hurt, taught us about the birds and the bees, showed me how to braid my hair, sang and danced with us in the living room.... She is the person who helped most to build me into the person that I am today. I can never thank her enough for all that she has given me.

I know it wasn't easy for my mom. She worked herself to exhaustion most days and still managed to take time out for things like scrapbooking and helping us make our own Halloween costumes (that's right--we had home made, one of a kind costumes every year and they were the BEST!). She didn't get to pursue a lot of her own interests because she was always helping us pursue ours. A lot of you who know my mom may not know this, but she is an amazing artist! Don't ask her about it, because she will deny that she is as good as I say she is. Just trust me.

I can't imagine doing what my mom had to do. Being a single mother for a year was hard enough on me, and I only have one baby. She did it for much longer than a year and with THREE babies. Holy crap!! And she had three by the time she was 22!! She's a trooper. A lot of the time, she had to be Mom AND Dad. She got to do all the fun stuff, but she also had to do the hard stuff as well. Now that I am a Mother, I more fully understand the ups and downs of parenthood. The good is overwhelmingly fantastic. The bad....can be heartbreaking. I hate having to discipline my son. It is so upsetting when he doesn't behave because I have to correct him and I can't stand that sad little face that he get when he knows I'm not happy with him. My mom had that X3. Ouch. :'(

I am incredibly grateful for my mother. For all that she did for us when I was growing up, and for being an excellent example to me. It is because of her guidance that I am the mother that I am today. I have continued most of the traditions she engraved in our lives with my son. I only hope that some day my children will be able to appreciate how much they are loved, as I now understand the love my mother has for us. She is my best friend and one of my biggest blessings. I know that my mom is mine for a very special purpose and I thank the Lord for sending me to her. I don't mean to make all the rest of you upset, but I truly have the best mother in the world (she is also an AMAZING grandmother!). She may not always be perfect, but I know that's what she is working toward and every day she gets a little closer.

Mom, if you are reading this, know that I love and appreciate you more than words can say. Happy Mother's Day!!

Isn't she pretty?!
